Understand Roles and Permissions

Learn the two things that decide what someone reaches: their brokerage access level and the permissions their broker hands them.

Open Team in BrokerPlus

Two separate settings decide what a person reaches in BrokerPlus, and they are owned by two different people. Knowing which one you are looking at saves the usual argument about why a teammate can see a file but cannot change it.

Two Layers, Not One

The first layer is the brokerage access level. It is account level, it covers brokerage setup, billing and oversight, and a brokerage admin sets it.

The second layer is the seat someone holds on a broker's team, and the permissions attached to it. That is the broker's to set, not the principal's. The brokerage access dialog says so directly: who joins that team and what they may do is set by its owner, not here.

The Four Brokerage Access Levels

LevelWhat it means
AdminRuns the brokerage: setup, billing, oversight, and the roster page.
MemberA broker with their own book and their own team.
ComplianceReads across every team for screenings and evidence. Sits on no team.
View onlyReads the brokerage and changes nothing.

Admins, compliance reviewers and view-only users hold no team membership by design, so the roster files them under Brokerage. A Member invited without a named team onboards as a broker and gets a team of their own.

The Twelve Team Permissions

The permission picker sorts twelve permissions into three groups.

Your clients covers Read the team inbox, Contact clients directly, Take licensed work, Handle documents and Run compliance checks. Your deals covers Edit deal details, Clear conditions and Submit to lenders. Your business covers See commission, See business analytics, Manage the team and Manage automations.

Several of them remove a surface rather than dimming it. Without See commission a deal has no Commission tab, and without See business analytics there is no Business section.

Handing the Team to Someone Else

Manage the team lets a teammate run the roster: invite someone, edit a teammate's title and what they handle, change what they hold, and remove them. It stays inside the one team and reaches nobody on another crew.

Two rows stay out of their hands. They cannot edit the team's broker, and they cannot edit their own, so nobody widens their own.

What a Team's Broker Always Holds

The broker who owns a team holds every one of the twelve permissions automatically, and no one can edit their row. Some things stay with them alone: only the team's broker can change who receives the daily digest, and only the broker can lock client data. Changing who owns a team means transferring the team, not re-permissioning the row.

Why a Permission Change Is Refused

BrokerPlus refuses a change for one of four reasons, and says which:

  • You do not manage this team.
  • You cannot change your own permissions, so ask the team's broker.
  • The team's broker owns every permission; transfer the team to change its owner.
  • You cannot give someone a permission you do not hold yourself.

That last one is about handing a permission out, not about the ones a teammate already has. If someone on the roster holds a permission you do not, you can still edit the rest of their row - that permission simply shows as locked in the picker, so you can see they hold it and cannot switch it either way.

Leaving is the exception. A teammate may always remove themselves from a team, even though they cannot edit their own permissions.
