ComplianceComplete the Risk Rating Checklist

Complete the Risk Rating Checklist

Score each borrower against the risk factors and record the rating the rest of the file depends on.

Open Mortgages in BrokerPlus

Every individual borrower on a deal needs a FINTRAC risk rating on file, and BrokerPlus records it through a twenty-nine-factor checklist that lives on the deal itself, independent of whether anyone runs a screening report. Score what applies and BrokerPlus computes the risk level and the rescreening schedule that follows from it.

When You'd Use This

Rate a borrower as soon as they join a deal and no rating exists yet, or revisit the checklist once new facts land in the file - a bureau pull, a down-payment source, an employment change - that would move the score.

Opening the Checklist

On a deal's Compliance view, each individual borrower gets a row with a Checklist button and a Run Report button. Checklist opens the rating modal directly; no screening is required. Run Report is the separate, optional path that spends a credit, and if a checklist already exists, the screening dialog opens pre-filled with it instead of asking twice - it is one questionnaire either way.

Factors That Raise and Lower a Rating

The checklist carries 22 inherent risk factors, each adding points - a foreign PEP, a sanctions list match, a non-resident borrower, refused ID - and 7 mitigating factors, each subtracting points, such as a client known more than five years or significant T4 income. Mitigation only unlocks once High-Risk Occupation is checked among the inherent factors, and is capped at 10 points so it can never fully offset a genuinely high-risk score. Reference lists for high-risk occupations and jurisdictions sit alongside the checklist.

Reading the Rating You Get

The final score is inherent points minus capped mitigation. A score of 10 or more is high risk, 5 to 9 is medium, and anything lower is low. The chip on the borrower's row shows that determination rather than just whether someone rated them - "cleared" over a high-risk borrower would hide the answer the chip exists to give.

Writing the Reason Behind It

Once rated, a rationale box appears under the borrower's row for how you arrived at it, in your own words. Draft from the File pulls a starting note from what the deal already holds, marking any line it cannot answer for you to fill in before relying on it. Nothing is saved until you select Save Rationale.

Re-Rating Someone Later

Reopen Checklist any time - it reseeds from what is on file rather than starting blank. Saving a new score leaves the existing rationale in place unless you write a new one; a rescore is not a retraction of what you already explained. A screening already on file for that borrower has its own risk rating and next-screening date updated to match.

Common Gotchas

  • Only individual borrowers get a checklist row. A realtor, lawyer or other non-borrower party, and any entity contact, has no FINTRAC rating obligation here and shows no row.
  • Rating a borrower is separate from screening one. The screening report costs a credit and is optional; the rating is not tied to it and does not require a screening to exist first.
  • Saving is refused if the contact is not actually a borrower on that deal, rather than silently recording a rating against the wrong person.

What to Do Next

  • Run a Screening on a Client to also check sanctions and adverse media, not only score risk.
  • Tour the Compliance Record on a Deal to see where the rating sits alongside everything else the file owes.
  • Record a PEP Attestation if the borrower's PEP status needs its own signed record.
