Every Pulse automation is three answers: the moment that starts it, the steps it runs, and the timing of each one. The editor puts the first on the left and the second on the right, and nothing goes out until you save it.

8:43Pick the Moment That Starts It
Add trigger on Your Triggers opens the picker, which asks you to pick the moment this trigger fires on. The twelve moments sit in two groups. Retention is the eight that come around on their own, such as a mortgage anniversary, an equity milestone or renewal outreach. Pipeline is the four that happen because a file moved: a deal created, a deal moving into a stage, a tag added, a new lead arriving. A set of sensible triggers is already created for you and switched off, so opening one and changing it is often faster than starting empty.
Answer What the Trigger Asks
The left column changes with the moment you picked. Every trigger needs a Name. A stage trigger needs its Stage, a tag trigger its Tags, a date trigger its Date to fire on plus a Timing offset in days before or after. Below that, Only when the deal has narrows it further, How often it can fire chooses between Once per deal and Every time it happens, and What stops it decides whether the remaining steps keep running once the deal no longer matches.
Once per deal means the first time only: moving that deal back into the same stage, or adding the same tag again, starts nothing. Choose Every time it happens for anything a client should go through more than once. A trigger about a person rather than a file reads Once per contact and counts them instead.
Add the Steps It Runs
Add step on the right adds a step, and Do what sets what it does: Send an email, Send a text message, Create a task, Send a notification, Tag the deal or Add to a call list. A message step needs a template and a Send to recipient. It also carries How it sends, where Draft for review waits in your queue for approval and Send automatically goes out on the day.
Start With a Step Nothing Leaves the Building On
A trigger that tags a deal or files a task for you is the safest first one to run, because no client sees it. Keep message steps on Draft for review until you have watched a few go through.
Choose Where a New Deal Opens
In an advanced canvas, a Start a New Deal step can choose the Stage It Opens In. Pick the stage directly and its board is used automatically. If you also choose a board, choose a stage on that same board. Leave the stage empty to use the board's first stage, or leave both empty to use your default board.
Choose the opening stage on this step rather than adding a separate stage-move step afterward. An automation started by a contact or a booked meeting does not pass the newly created deal to later steps.
Move a Deal Automatically
An automatic Move the Deal to a Stage step moves the deal to your chosen stage, including on another board. Stage permission switches govern the assistant's choices, not your configured move.
Advanced Pulse must have Read-only Mode off. Draft steps still need approval. Missing stage requirements stop the move and mark the automation as needing attention.
Set the Timing
Each step carries its own Timing in days. Most count forward from the trigger firing, so zero runs the same day. Renewal steps count down instead, reading as days before the renewal date. Adding several steps at different offsets is how one trigger becomes a sequence rather than a single message.
Save and Turn It On
Save & enable creates the trigger switched on. If something is missing, the editor lists it instead of saving, for example a name, a stage, or a step with no template. Later edits show Discard and Save changes, and the switch on the card turns the trigger off without deleting it.
